In the short story The Augean Stables, Dr Henderson is the Bishop of Northumbria. In a libel suit brought against the X-ray News by Edward Ferrier Henderson testified as a character witness, vouching for Dagmar Ferrier.

According to Henderson, on the dates which the X-ray News alleged (with photographs) that Dagmar Ferrier had been in a Paris night club or at a beach with various lounge lizards, Mrs Ferrier had in fact been staying in the Palace with himself and his wife. Exhausted by her public duties, a doctor had advised her to take a thorough rest. Her visit had been kept a secret to avoid having her pursued by the press.

Dr Henderson is described in the text as "one of the best-known figures in the English church, a man of great saintliness and integrity of character. He was broadminded, tolerant, and a fine preacher. He was loved and revered by all who knew him."
