In the novel Sparkling Cyanide, Dr Gaskell is mentioned by Lucilla Drake. He is a physician (or chemist) which was acquainted with the Marle family. When Lucilla Drake noticed that Iris Marle was looking "white and washed out", she thought she had not been sleeping well and suggested one of the preparations made by Dr Wylie or Dr Gaskell. Mention of Dr Gaskell made Lucilla think of the local grocer whose name is Cranford. This is a nod to the novel named Cranford, which was written by Elizabeth Gaskell.
