In the authorised Miss Marple continuation short story The Open Mind, Dr Eammon McManaway is a fellow St Bede's College, Oxford, specialising in ancient languages.
Dr McManaway was seated opposite Miss Marple at the high table during the Founder's Day Dinner at St Bede's College. As such, he proved to be an important source of background information about the various intrigues in the college. He told Miss Marple about the hostility betweem the Master, Professor Cuthbert Cayling and the bursar Simon Skipper, and also about the behaviour of Cayling with various young female colleagues. In response to Miss Marple's question about whether Cayling could be considered "safe" with yuong women, he replied in the negative. Watching Cayling with the young BBC producer Elspeth Hearken, Dr McManaway commented that it would be just like what happened with a young research student Harrison some time ago.
Dr McManaway is described as a "dour, long-faced, rather thin and pale man". His demeanour was "grim as if .... attending a funeral not a celebration feast".
