In the short story The Lernean Hydra, Dr Charles Oldfield is a country doctor in the village of Market Loughborough in Berkshire. After his wife died, rumours began to circulate in the village that he had poisoned her because he was in love with his dispenser Jean Moncrieffe. Poirot, when approached, agreed to help but he warned the doctor that he would seek to expose the truth.
