Dorothy Yarde is a mutual friend of both Miss Marple and Mrs Fane.

Miss Marple considered it fortunate that among her many friends and relations scattered throughout England, she knew Dorothy who could give her an introduction to Mrs Fane. Dorothy had written to Eleanor Fane telling her that Miss Marple would be holidaying in Dillmouth and asked Eleanor to ask her to tea. This gave Miss Marple the opportunity to get background information about Eleanor's son, Walter Fane. This was pursued after some opening pleasantries about Dorothy's sciatica.
