In the novel Absent in the Spring, Dorothea is a friend of Joan Scudamore. While being stranded in Tell Abu Hamid Joan thought of friends she could write to in order to share her experiences. She thought of Dorothea but in the end decided to write to another friend Janet Annesmore.
