In the short story The Bird with the Broken Wing, Doris Coles a friend of Madge Keeley and is, together with Mr Satterthwaite, one of the guests at a dinner party at Laidell organised to serve as the setting for the announcement of the engagement of Madge Keeley to Roger Graham. Doris is short and dark, and very hearty with, a loud voice. She is "the type of young woman Mr Satterthwaite most disliked" and had "no artistic justification for existence".
