In the novel A Pocket Full of Rye, Donald MacKenzie was the son of Mr and Mrs MacKenzie, and the brother of Ruby. His father died when he was nine. Mrs MacKenzie was convinced that Rex Fortescue was to blame for her husband's death, and she made Donald and Ruby swear on the Bible every night that they would kill him. However, Donald was himself killed at Dunkirk during the Second World War.
