In the novel Towards Zero, Don is a wire-haired terrier owned by Diana Brinton. He had rolled in some dead fish which gave him a distinctive and unpleasant smell. Angus MacWhirter helped Diana to clean the dog and became familiar with this smell. He later recognised the same smell on a suit which he got back from the laundry.
