In the short story The Kidnapped Prime Minister, Detective Barnes was a Scotland Yard officer who was assigned as the police liaison for Poirot when he was investigating the disappearance of the Prime Minister David MacAdam. In this role, he ensured that whatever arrangements Poirot needed was provided. Hastings, although he remained in dark as to what Poirot was doing, noted that wherever Poirot went, police vehicles were waiting, or police officers were standing by to pass him information. It was likely to be through Barnes that Poirot made the final arrangements to mount a raid on the house of Mrs Everard at Hampstead.

Detective Barnes is not featured in the film adaptation of The Kidnapped Prime Minister in Series 2 of ITV's Agatha Christie's Poirot. Here his role was filled by Chief Inspector Japp
