In the short story The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding, David Welwyn was a guest at the Christmas house party at Kings Lacey together with Hercule Poirot. David was an old family friend of the Lacey family, and Mrs Emmeline Lacey, the hostess, planned to matchmake him with another family friend, the recently widowed Diana Middleton.
David was described as "solid and quiet", with a pleasant smile and "rather obviously addicted to soap and water."

David Welwyn was played by John Vernon in the film adaptation of the story in Series 3 of ITV's Agatha Christie's Poirot. His backstory is slightly altered. Here he was a dealer in antiques. Colonel Horace Lacey needed to sell some of his Egyptian antiquities to raise some much needed cash. He invited David to spend Christmas at Kings Lacey so that he could look through the items and suggest something suitable for sale. Besides, David was interested in Colonel Lacey's grand daughter Sarah and the visit would be a chance for him to convince her.
