In the short story The Bird with the Broken Wing, David Keeley is the father of Madge. He lives at their country house Laidell. David is described as "one of those quiet men with indeterminate personalities" who seem to become "part of the furniture". A standing joke among his friends is that he is "an invisible man" whom no one would notice. On the other hand, David is also a brilliant mathematician, but as Mr Satterthwaite observes, as with many men of brilliant intellect, David "radiated no bodily vigour or magnetism".
