In the novel A Murder is Announced, Cutie is a red setter, belonging to Miss Hinchcliffe and Miss Murgatroyd.
While Miss Hinchcliffe is trying to get Miss Murgatroyd to remember who was not in the drawing room at Little Paddocks when the shots were fired on the night of the hold up, she receives a telephone call informing her that Cutie is at the station. Miss Hinchcliffe leaves to pick Cutie up before Miss Murgatroyd can tell her who was not in the drawing room.
While Miss Hinchcliffe is away, Miss Murgatroyd is strangled to death. Cutie discovers her body first, and alerts Miss Hinchcliffe and Miss Marple by howling.
