In the novel Evil Under the Sun, Constable Flint is a member of the Devon police called upon to help in the investigation into the murder of Arlena Marshall on Smugglers' Island.

Flint was somewhat of an athlete. Inspector Colgate asked him to test how long it would take to traverse various routes on Smugglers' Island. He found, for example, that walking from the hotel and down the ladder to Pixy's Cove would take a quarter of an hour. But if one walked till out of sight of the hotel and then ran the rest of the way, one could reach the top of the ladder in three minutes, with another minute and 45 seconds to go down the ladder. Coming up the ladder would take about two minutes. That was quicker than expected.
