In the novel The Secret Adversary, Conrad is an operative of Kramenin's gang, an organisation which British authorities thought to be ultimately controlled by a mysterious "Mr Brown". He served mainly as the doorkeeper for the house where the gang held its secret meetings. Later when Tommy was captured by the gang, he served as Tommy's gaoler.
Conrad is described as being a "villainous-faced man with close-cropped hair".
