In the novel Cards on the Table, Combeacre is a village in Devon. Anne Meredith lived there for a while and worked for a Mrs Benson. After the death of Mrs Benson Anne left the village.
During the investigation into the death of Mr Shaitana, Superintendent Battle contacted Inspector Harper to find out more about the death of Mrs Benson.
