In the novel Destination Unknown, Colonel Wharton is a British security agent who is working with Mr Jessop on the case of the disappearance of the scientist Thomas Betterton. Wharton is a contrast to his colleague. He is described as "dark with a small military moustache". He is full of nervous energy and paces up and down when agitated. He speaks in a jerky manner "with a kind of machine gun like abruptness". He leaves the questioning of Mrs Olive Betterton to Jessop because he admits that he doesn't have the patience to go over the same ground again and again with no seeming progress.
