Cockington is a village near Torquay in Devon. It is a picturesque village of thatched houses which has been said to be one of the most photographed villages in England.[1] The young Agatha would often ride her horse from the stables at South Street near her home at Ashfield through the narrow country lanes to Cockington. Nearby is the village manor of Cockington Court which was the residence of Agatha Christie's friends, the Mallock family.
It is possible that Cockington served as the inspiration for St. Mary Mead. From Cockington, a road leads directly into Torquay just like St. Mary Mead directly into Danemouth, as mentioned in The Body in the Library. It is true that Cockington is only about 2 miles from Torquay whikle St. Mary Mead is, according to "Body in the Library" some 18 miles from Danemouth. This distance was however necessary for plot purposes in order for some suspects to have plausible alibis.
