Clive Merrison (born 15 September 1945) is a Welsh actor of stage, screen and radio. He has made extensive guest appearances in classic television programmes such as Doctor Who, When the Boat Comes In, The Borgias, Reilly: Ace of Spies, Yes, Prime Minister, Bergerac, Chancer, Drop the Dead Donkey, The Bill, Foyle's War, Peep Show, Lewis and Midsomer Murders. His film work includes Clint Eastwood's Firefox, Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures, An Awfully Big Adventure, The English Patient, The Lady in the Van, and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
Perhaps Merrison's most notable stage part is as the Headmaster in Alan Bennett's Olivier Award and Tony Award winning play The History Boys. The cast also included Richard Griffiths (in a Olivier and Tony winning performance), Frances de la Tour, Samuel Barnett, and Russell Tovey. Merrison reprised his role for the Broadway run, and for both the film version and the BBC Radio adaptation.
Merrison is best known for his acclaimed and long-running portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on BBC Radio from 1989-2010. Notably, he became the first actor to have appeared in adaptations of all 60 of the original Conan Doyle stories.
