In the stage play Black Coffee, Sir Claud Herbert Amory was a renowned physicist. He lived at Abbot's Cleve, in the village of Market Cleve in Surrey, with his family. He was the widow of Helen and the father of Richard Amory.

He had invited Hercule Poirot and Captain Hasting to his home. When they arrived, he was found murdered.
