Chris Murphy is a non-canonical character created for the Agatha Christie's Marple adaptation By the Pricking of My Thumbs. He is an American serviceman at a US Air Force base near the Norfolk village of Farrell St Edmund, where most of the action in the later part of the story takes place.

Chris is mainly involved in a sideplot revolving around his relationship with Rose Waters, the daughter of Dr Joshua Waters, the village doctor. Ethan Maxwell, the village constable and his rival in love tries to pin the blame for various crimes on him, crimes which intersect with the main plot of the story. Chris is also initially a suspect after his truck run s over the body of Nellie Bligh but he is exonerated when it is found that she had been killed by poisoning before being run over.

In the course of the episode, Rose discovers a note from one “Sylvia” making an appointment with Chris. This causes a misunderstanding between her and Chris and leads to her accepting a proposal of marriage from Ethan. Sylvia turns out to be Chris's English mother. With some help from Miss Marple, Rose and Chris are reunited at the end. Dr Waters at first does not approve of his daughter's relationship with Chris as he fears she would move away but he beccomes cheerful at the end when Chris tells him that he intends to marry Rose and settle down in the village.
