In the novel 4.50 from Paddington, Chick Evans is an associate of Dicky Rogers, and is known to the police. At 9.30 p.m. on 20th December, Sergeant Leakie had been the Load of Bricks, a lorry pull-up on the Waddington-Brackhampton road, and had seen Chick Evans and Alfred Crackenthorpe together. A few minutes later, Alfred boarded a bus in the direction of Brackhampton. This information tells Inspector Craddock that Alfred could have had the opportunity to commit the murder earlier in the day, go to the Load of Bricks, and then go to Rutherford Hall, and hide the body in the Long Barn.
