In the short story The Dead Harlequin, Charnley is the family seat of the Charnley family. The Terrace Room and the Oak Parlour are two of the rooms in the house. Since the death of Lord Charnley fourteen years ago, the house has been boarded up.
The house is said to be haunted. Charles I has been seen walking up and down the terrace, with his head under his arm. The second ghost, the Weeping Lady with the Silver Ewer, always shows herself after one of the Charnley family members die.
Painter Frank Bristow used the Terrace Room as the setting for his painting The Dead Harlequin. A photograph of the Terrace Room is also featured in the book Homes of My Friends, by Mr Satterthwaite.
