In the short story The Red Signal, Charlson is the chaffeur of the psychiatrist Sir Alington West. After a dinner hosted by the Trents, he drives Sir Alington and his nephew Dermot West back to Sir Alington's residence at Harley Street. Sir Alington then dismisses Charlson for the night because Dermot says he can take a cab from there to his next destination.
