In the short story The Voice in the Dark, Charles Gale is a former husband of Barbara Barron and the father of Margery. He comes from a long line of country squires. Margery takes after her father in most ways, hence Lady Stranleigh, who is Margery's mother, cannot understand it when Margery recently said she had been hearing voices in the dark. That did not sound like Charles, but more like another, much more temperamental husband named Rudolf.
