In the novel Hickory Dickory Dock, Chandra Lal is a student from India residing at the hostel in Hickory Road. He had a tendency to interpret everything with a political slant and was constantly bringing up politics during group occasions such as meals at the hostel. His boracic powder was among the items which had been stolen. His field of study is not stated but it is possible that he is a medical student. Inspector Sharpe said that one of the two Indian students at Hickory Road is a medical student, and considered this person a plausible suspect for stealing morphia tartrate from the dispensary at St Catherine's Hospital which had been used to poison Celia Austin. He would also know enough science to suggest kleptomania as a means for Celia to attract the attention of Colin McNabb. However Poirot disagreed. "His mind is entirely occupied with politics and persecution mania," Poirot said, implying that this medical student was Chandra.
