Research chemists are scientists who specialise in chemistry and who work in related fields such as teaching chemistry in an institution of learning or conducting chemical experiments in a laboratory. Christie appears to use this term also in her works. It is a way of distinguishing such scientists from "chemists" who, in British usage, are pharmacists.
