A portrait painted by William Orpen
In the short story The Cretan Bull, Mrs Caroline Chandler was the deceased wife of Charles Chandler and the mother of Hugh. She drowned when Hugh was ten years old. Caroline was an heiress and left her money to her son.
In her youth she had been in love with Colonel Frobisher, but she ended up married to Charles.
At Lyde Manor there is a portrait of her painted by the artist William Orpen.
