In the stage play Black Coffee, Caroline Amory is the spinster sister of the scientist Sir Claud Amory. She lives with his brother and his family at Abbot's Cleve. She runs his household for him, looks after the other members of the family and acts as hostess to guests. Stage directions describe her as "an elderly lady of the old school, a little fussy but kind". Her niece says that she is too Victorian in her outlook.
