In the novel Murder in Mesopotamia, Captain Maitland is a British policeman in Hassanieh in Iraq. He is in charge of the Louise Leidner murder investigation. He is described as a "fussy little man with a pair of shrewd grey eyes". Nurse Leatheran describes him as "a man of action", and he is rather annoyed with Poirot's lengthy explanations during the denouement.

Portrayals[]

In the ITV 2001 TV adapatation of the novel, Maitland's rank is changed to Superintendent. He operates out of Baghdad instead of Hassanieh. In this adaptation Sheila Reilly, the daughter of Dr Giles Reilly becomes "Sheila Maitland", the superintendent's daughter. The part of Superintendent Maitland is played by Iain Mitchell.
