In the short story Accident, Captain Haydock is a retired Royal Navy Captain living in an English village. He is a friend and neighbour of a retired policeman Inspector Evans. Another of his neighbours are the the Merrowdenes. Evans tells Haydock that he recognises Mrs Merrowdene as one "Mrs Anthony" who had been acquitted for poisoning her husband Mr Anthony some nine years earlier. Haydock had learnt in the course of a long career at sea to leave things which did not concern him well alone. Evans, however, has the opposite philosophy in life.
