Captain Ainsworth was a character created for the 2004 ITV adaptation of the novel The Murder at the Vicarage. His photograph can also be seen in Miss Marple's sitting room in the previous episode The Body in the Library, although during that episode who he is and what he means to her is not explained.

He was a military officer during the First World War. The opening scene shows Ainsworth at a photography studio having his photograph taken. His wife May Ainsworth is with him. Later he is seen at a railway station about to depart for the front. A young Jane Marple is shown as being in love with him and having an affair with him. While seeing him off at the train station, she tells him not to come back for her sake. He must come back for his wife's sake. Just as he must go to do his duty, Miss Marple has decided that she must do her duty and break off with him.

He was portrayed by actor Marc Warren, but he was not credited for the part.
