In the short story The Mystery of the Baghdad Chest, Burgoyne was the valet of Major Jack Rich. He discovered the body of Edward Clayton in the Baghdad chest.

In the expanded version of the story The Mystery of the Spanish Chest. Burgoyne's name was changed to "William Burgess". For a while Poirot considered him as the only other plausible suspect in the murder but after interviewing him, he realised that Burgess did not have the personality to commit the act.

Portrayals

In the film adaptation of the story in Series 3 of ITV's Agatha Christie's Poirot, the character name reverts to Burgoyne. Here Burgoyne is played by Peter Copley.
