In the novel Mrs McGinty's Dead, Broadhinny was the village where Mrs McGinty lived. It is located in Devon about a quarter of a mile off the main Drymouth to Kilchester road.
There is a small postoffice and shop managed by Mrs Sweetiman, good bus and rail services to Kilchester and also the summer resort of Cullenquay eight miles away. Superintendent Spence described the place as a small village which had "lately become residential".
