In the short story The Arcadian Deer, the Black Swan Inn is an in in the village of Hartly Dene. When his car broke down, Hercule Poirot as forced to walk a mile and a half in the snow to the inn. Poirot observed that the landlord seemed almost dismayed to have him because the inn was highly unready to receive guests, winter being the low season. The landlord tried to persuade Poirot that the local garage could rent him a car but Poirot insisted on getting a room. It is at the inn that Poirot first encounters Ted Williamson, a local garage hand. He had come to report on the progress of repairs to the car.
