In the short story The Horses of Diomedes, Beryl Larkin is a wealthy widow who lives in Mertonshire. According to Lady Carmichael, who was Poirot's hostess and his resource person on the local social scene, not much was known about Mrs Larkin's background. Her husband had a job "in the city" but had died. She was said to be very well off. There were some rumours that she was taking drugs. Beryl was also a good friend of Anthony Hawker.
