In the short story The Voice in the Dark, Barbara Barron, Lady Stranleigh, was the younger sister of Beatrice Barron. In their youth her older sister had been next in line to inherit the title from their cousin Lord Stranleigh. The two sisters and their maid travelled onboard the Uralia, when the boat sank. Barbara and the maid survived but Beatrice drowned.

Lady Stranleigh has been married four times. One of her husbands was named Rudolf and one was named Charles Gale. Charles is the father of Margery. Her current admirerer is a young man called Bimbo.

Later it turned out that Beatrice actually had survived and that it was the maid who had drowned, but since Beatrice lost her memory in the accident Barbara claimed that her sister was the one who drowned, and that the maid had survived. Thus Barbara inherited the title, and her sister worked as her maid. Barbara was later drowned by her sister, who had found out the truth.
