The Balearic Islands are a group of Mediterranean islands, belonging to Spain. The largest islands are Mallorca (or Majorca), Menorca (or Minorca), Ibiza and Formentera. Christie herself holidayed on Mallorca in 1932 and used her personal experience as the setting for some of her stories.[1]
The island of Mallorca was used for the 1982 film Evil Under the Sun.

- Most of the events in the story take place at the actual town of Pollença. Two hotels named in the story, Hotel Mariposa and Hotel Pino d'Oro were patterned after hotels personally known to Christie during the time she had holidayed on Mallorca.[1]
