In the short story In a Glass Darkly, Badgeworthy is the family estate of the Carslake family. It was described as a rambling old house that had been in the family for hundreds of years. "It had been added to freely in the last three centuries and was full of little steps up and down, and unexpected staircases. It was the sort of house in which it’s not easy to find your way about." There is no indication in the text where Badgeworthy is located.

According to Neil Carslake, the house was said to be haunted, but none of his family had ever seen anything, and he did not know what form the ghost was supposed to take.
