In the novel The Man in the Brown Suit, Augustus Milray is a British government official. He asks Sir Eustace Pedler to help courier some important and highly confidential documents from London to South Africa to present to General Smuts, the prime minister there. Milray says "there are reasons" why he prefers an unofficial channel rather than an official one. Sir Eustace reluctantly agrees and brings forward his journey plans and takes the documents with him on board the Kilmorden Castle.
