In the short story The Gypsy, Arthur Lawes was the brother of Esther and Rachel Lawes. Arthur had been a great friend of Dickie Carpenter, but had died young, some time before the events narrated in the story. It was however through this misfortune that Dickie drew closer to Esther because, after the death of Arthur, she would write to Dickie (who was serving in the navy) and would send him newspapers.
