In the short story Christmas Adventure, Annie Hicks was the between-maid at the house of Squire Endicott and his sister Miss Emily Endicott. During the Christmas house party, she left a note for Poirot to avoid the plum pudding as she suspected that Oscar Levering and his sister were planning to do him harm through it.

Her counterpart in the expanded story The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding was Annie Bates. Unlike Annie Bates, who left her note on Poirot's pillow, Annie Hicks left a note for Poirot in the hall which she knew Graves the butler would bring in to him. At the end of the story, Poirot praised her but unlike Annie Bates, she did not get a choice of presents. Poirot promised to send her some educational books!
