In the novel They Came to Baghdad, André is one of a pair of French tourists (the other being Juvet) who came to visit the archaeological dig at Tell Aswad. They declared that they were making a tour through Syria and Iraq and were very interested in archaeology. Dr Pauncefoot Jones was annoyed by the disruption but found it convenient that Victoria Jones was around and so could take over the duty of giving the Frenchmen a tour of the site.

Partway through the tour, one of the two (the text does not specify which), declared that he felt rather ill, and went back to the expedition house. The other told Victoria that this was because he had stomach problems. Soon after, the Frenchmen took their leave.

When Richard Baker and Victoria returned to the expedition house, they were surprised to see that Richard's personal belongings had all been turned out and searched. Fortunately nothing was missing.

Edward Goring later told Victoria that André and Juvet were two agents of his secret "New Order" organisation. The organisation had learnt that Richard Baker had met Henry Carmichael briefly in Basra and thought the latter might have passed Baker something. André and Juvet were sent to search Richard's belongings but in the end did not find anything.
