In the short story The Companion, Miss Amy Durrant was one of two English women Dr Lloyd met at the Metropole Hotel, Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. Dr Lloyd was at that time practising as a doctor there while the two ladies had come down for a vacation to spend the winter in the Canary Islands. Amy Durrant was the companion of the other English woman, Miss Mary Barton. Amy had been employed by Miss Barton some five months earlier and prior to their vacation they had resided at Little Paddocks, Caughton Weir, Buckinghamshire.

The next day, Dr Lloyd encountered the two women again, this time in the midst of a tragedy at a sheltered beach called Las Nieves. It seemed that Amy had gone out to swim and had gone too far from shore and had drowned. Tracing who Amy was and who her relatives were proved extremely difficult. Dr Lloyd made many efforts but failed.

In narrating this story to the Tuesday Night Club, Dr Lloyd implied there was a crime behind the whole sequence of events. What crime it was, and what the motive was forms the main challenge for the members of the club.
