In the short story The Arcadian Deer, Ambrose Vandel is a theatre set designer and an acquaintance of Hercule Poirot. Ambrose was knowledgeable about the goings-on in the theatre world and gave Poirot background information on Sir George Sanderfield ("nasty fellow", "rolling in money") and the ballerina Katrina Samoushenka ("too delicious", "lovely technique"). He was, however, unable to introduce Poirot to Madame Samoushenka because she had apparently left London and gone to Paris or somewhere else.
