In the short story The Gypsy, Mrs Alistair Haworth was married to Maurice Haworth. Just like her mother, Alistair had the gift of second sight and how this gift intersects with the fate of Dickie Carpenter forms the main plot of the story.

Dickie Carpenter described Mrs Haworth as "fair, very fair" with hair "a lovely pale shining yellow". Yet at other times, Carpenter thought she really was rather dark, like a gypsy he had once had dreams about. Mrs Haworth tells Macfarlane that her gift (or curse, as she sometimes refers to it) runs in her family, the Ferguessons.
