In the novel The Mystery of the Blue Train, Alice is a maid of all work in St. Mary Mead. She turns up at the train station when Katherine Grey is leaving the village. She brings a "stiff wired nosegay", and cries openly.

Alice remembers that when Charlie had left her for a girl at the dairy, Miss Grey had been very kind to her. She also mentions that Miss Grey would always notice when she had given a thing an extra rub when polishing it. Alice feels so strongly about Miss Grey that she says that she would cut herself "in little pieces for her".
