In the novel At Bertram's Hotel, Alice is one of the staff at the hotel. She assists Miss Gorringe at the front office. When the police arrived to interview Miss Gorringe about the disappearance of Canon Pennyfather, she asked Alice to manage the front desk herself. In particular, she gave Alice instructions on how to handle Lady Jocelyn. She would be arriving soon and Miss Gorringe was certain she would dislike her room but there was no alternative as the hotel was full. Alice could show her number 340 on the third floor and offer her that instead but that room was even worse. Alice was also told to ensure that Colonel Mortimer did not forget his field glasses which he had left with the front desk.
Portrayals[]
In the BBC 1987 adaptation of the novel, Alice is portrayed by Henrietta Voigts. She is seen on various occasions, like when Elvira Blake asked for her room key and when she answered a call from Mrs McCrae. The lines about Lady Jocelyn and Colonel Mortimer are omitted though.
