In the novel The Seven Dials Mystery, Alfred is a former second footman at Chimneys, now working at Seven Dials night club. Bundle Brent recognised him on a visit to the club.
Later, Bundle approached Alfred and asked him what had led him to leave Chimneys. He said that Mr Mosgorovsky who owned the club had visited Chimneys and had offered him a hundred pounds to leave Chimneys and work for the club because he wanted someone familiar with nobility to give the place some tone. Bundle then warned Alfred that she knew something illegal was going on in the club and that Alfred could get penal servitude for being involved. Thus frightened, he agreed to help Bundle. He showed her the secret room where meetings of the Seven Dials group are held and helped her hide in a cupboard so that she could eavesdrop on a meeting.
