In the novel Hickory Dickory Dock, Ahmed Ali is an Egyptian student residing at Hickory Road. He was out on the night Poirot visited the hostel and did not meet him. Mrs Hubbard described Ali as "frightfully political". He protested volubly when Inspector Sharpe conducted a search of all the rooms in the hostel. The search revealed that Ali possessed a large quantity of pornographic literature and postcards. In a conversation with other residents later, Ali showed the same frame of mind when he opined that the killing of Celia Austin was a sex crime. He believed that Nigel Chapman had killed her--he had slept with her and then killed her. This was a theory which the others found utterly fantastical.
